By Ayman Abdelghafar

Eye migraine is a migraine type which known as ophthalmic migraine, ocular migraine and visual migraine. It is similar to the normal migraine. It involves the vessels of the blood. Its cause is vascular. Whereas the normal migraine affects the brain arteries. It affects the vision veins which supply the blood to the brain.

During ocular migraine symptoms, the patients experience visual disturbances which last for 15 to 30 minutes. It starts as semi circular light shape with shimmering light and jagged edges expands to become more central. The sight ability is obscured within the jagged part. The normal headache may accompany the visual disturbance but doesn’t occur in all cases. The common symptoms of the eye migraine are the heightened sensitivity to light, vomiting and nausea. Although the main reason for this migraine isn’t known, some of its triggers are identified as estrogen level shift, certain foods, alcohol, stress, eyestrain, dehydration, depression and fatigue.

Diagnosing ocular migraine require visits to the neurologist and ophthalmologist to make sure the symptoms aren’t caused by an underlying condition of eyes such as brain blood clot and detached retina. The proper medication will be provided once the diagnosing has been established.

This eye migraine doesn’t cause any damage to the eyes or the brain. If the symptoms are frequent, treatments will have to be administered. If the headache occurs with the visual disturbance, naproxen, ibuprofen and other over the counter medications may be taken to treat the headache. Aspirin and NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) could be used in relieving the eye migraine. They can keep the body arteries in their common size. Treatments should be used as soon as the first symptoms of the migraine aura are felt. The eye vision may be hampered during the attack and doing other activities may be impossible. The sufferer needs to wait for the migraine end and relax. Sounds and bright light should be avoided as they can worsen the signs.
